| submissions are invited for innovative designs for three new shelters to be built on a high profile location on blackpool's south shore promenade. the competition is open to all registered architects internationally. three years ago blackpool borough council [bbc] constructed an impressive new 2km stretch of sea defences and promenade along its south shore. the potential of the promenade as a 'plinth' for a spectacular collection of art works was realised and the council appointed specialist consultants [the art department] to commission and create new art works. the result is 'the great promenade show', a series of artworks commissioned from britain's finest public artists. in the same spirit of reinvention, reinterpretation and dynamic change the art department realised there was also an opportunity to devise an exciting new design solution for seafront shelters on the new promenade, and hence the concept of a swivelling wind shelter was conceived and developed. following successful trials to test the principle and set the parameters, it has now been agreed to open up the design of the physical structure up to architectural competition the competition offers architects the opportunity to depart from traditional forms and design a shelter that will serve an exciting landmark and contribute to this series of major new permanent outdoor artworks. a panel of judges will assess the schemes and the deadline for submission of designs is thursday 6th june 2002. for full details on the competition please contact the riba competitions office. 6 melbourne street leeds ls2 7ps tel: 0113 2341335 fax: 0113 2460744 e-mail: [email protected] |
