| pratt institute international 2002 summer seminar on architecture new york city, july 8 - august 16, 2002 pratt institute school of architecture is proud to announce its annual international summer seminar on architecture and urban design to take place in new york city, from july 8 through august 16, 2002. join us at pratt for, what we can say is both, timely and timeless architectural research towards the invention of new urban forms and meanings. the pratt summer seminar consists of architectural design studios, supported by history and theory lecture courses, focused on developing specific new york themes and sites. the program is conceived as a laboratory of educational experiments and where possible, actual urban interventions. by assembling and mobilizing an international team of teachers, practitioners and advanced students of architecture and urban design, the international seminar will stimulate, focus and create an awareness of critical architectural and urban issues faced by the modern metropolitan world. this year's theme: building at ground zero: high and dense architecture after september 11 the terrorists destroyed 'statues' which represented a way of life. we used to worry about global warming. we are now compelled to consider the destruction of architecture by human action. actions driven by religious arguments that are mixed with anger at globalization. how do we continue a discussion of art and architecture and their meaning, when for some, such symbols must be destroyed? the question of how to rebuild downtown manhattan is not a choice between economic rationality or symbolic content. today, the critical questions are epistemological and utilitarian at once. the language of architecture was not destroyed on september 11, 2001, just radically transformed. the era of the skyscraper is not over. how do we now build high and dense cities? how, specifically, can architecture still empower humans to construct and transmit knowledge? design competition: exhibit and awards for design excellence the design effort during the entire seminar is conceived as a design competition. the final jury will select one or more students who deserve this form of special recognition based upon their studio project, course work, and faculty recommendations. prize winning projects will be exhibited and presented at a public symposium in new york city. non-pratt students will be eligible for scholarships to continue their studies at pratt. campus housing housing is available upon request. students who choose to live on campus are housed in our air-conditioned residence halls. rooms are single occupancy. pratt institute's proximity to manhattan puts you in the center of the world's finest cultural pursuits: galleries, theaters and the finest restaurants are less than 30 minutes away by public transportation. contact information to learn more about the program, please visit the summer seminar website at http://www.pratt.edu/arch/seminar . you can also use the website to request more information or pre-register to reserve your seat in the seminar. you can also contact professor dan bucsescu, program director, by e-mail at [email protected] seminar website: http://www.pratt.edu/arch/seminar pratt school of architecture: http://www.pratt.edu/arch |
