| What artist, today, would literally disappear behind the thick wall of thirty different names...? Such a thing would be inconceivable today, hungry as we are for instant gratification and 'fame...' Forgetting thus, what Leonardo thought of fame...!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But in Hokusai's time many artists changed their names several times... but none, it seems, as often as this immensely prolific artist! How beautiful this changing of names, which often coincided with changes in his style of work and his outlook on life, probably. And we cannot arrest the thought remembering Toshiro Mifune in The Bodyguard by Kurosawa, when asked about his name, the great samurai looked pensively through the window, and answered: my name is The Leaves of Autumn, Falling...! We can only wish that our 'marketing strategies' would leave for us equal disponibilities for dreaming, for melting down into the world in equally beautiful and disinterested ways. As for Hokusi, the prodigious draftsperson, what can we say...? At 50 he modestly said that he was learning the ABC of his profession,,,. at 60 he confessed that he made a little bit of progress... at 70 that his progress was better, at 80 that he was getting 'there' and at 90... Yes, he had a long and productive life, but what is impressive here is the immense pride and the immense humbleness, at the same time. Design a House for Hokusai... or for one of his other 29 surnames...! Design a house for “the old man mad about art” – as he called himself. How tonic this very description...!!! Constantly seeking to produce better work, he apparently exclaimed on his deathbed, 'If only Heaven will give me just another ten years... Just another five more years, then I could become a real painter.' He died on May 10, 1849. Please send us ANY work, ANY size and ANY format that responds to the theme to [email protected].
