| Upon signing the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act on his 29th day in office, and subsequently launching Recovery.gov, President Obama has offered a plan for recovery to be carried out with 'full transparency and accountability'. This competition asks designers to imagine what recovery might look like and to offer this to the public in the form of imagery, intelligible beyond the abstraction of the graphs, charts, graphics and accounting figures. In this moment of change, designers have an opportunity to rethink how and with whom they operate. This competition advocates both for collaboration and for a place for designers in the initial imaginings of recovery: in the writing of the brief. Imagining Recovery offers a policy discussion forum for ten days beginning 5 May, the 45th day of the Obama presidency, to discuss with students of the Global Public Policy Network [GPPN] the issues of recovery wherein design can and will make an impact. The outcome of this forum will be summarized and will constitute the brief of the competition. Designers are asked to produce an image of recovery which is offered to the public, and to support this image with design of all sorts, as instructed by the brief. Submissions will be judged and winners will be awarded prizes and published in Volume Magazine. A large subset of the entries will be published in a book dedicated to the competition, and will be curated into a video exhibition which will be on view in New York, Beijing and Amman, with other cities soon to commit. The publication and exhibition will be available for download to reach the widest possible audience. Submissions are due on the 100th day of the presidency. Winners will be announced two weeks after submission. competition Web Site : http://www.imaginingrecovery.com/ Email Competition : [email protected] |
