| st leger homes is the arms length management organisation [almo] that manages council housing for doncaster metropolitan borough. doncaster is located in the centre of the country in south yorkshire and is the largest geographical metropolitan borough in england. until the 1980's doncaster was a major centre for coal mining and manufacturing with a number of working collieries in the rural areas around the town. the borough has a population of 289,000 living in 118,699 homes. st leger homes manages 21,636 properties which accounts for 18% of the entire housing stock. this includes 3,305 one bedroom bungalows, many of these homes are ex national coal board properties that were originally built for retired miners and they are located throughout the borough. over 99% of these were built between 1945 and 1970 and are of traditional brick and tile construction. similar properties are found in exmining communities in other parts of the country. a successful solution to remodelling the doncaster bungalows could have a more widespread application. typically, these homes offer limited accommodation with the kitchens and bathrooms being particularly small. as people live longer and more active lives and demographics and lifestyles alter, these properties are becoming increasingly unpopular and difficult to let. our customers tell us that they want better space standards convenience and amenity and that they would like a second bedroom to allow family and friends to stay with them. we are seeking innovative design proposals to alter and extend these bungalows to: - provide a second bedroom to the properties. - improve the internal layout to provide additional usable space - improve the quality and physical appearance of the properties and their neighbourhoods the constraints are: - we wish to retain the same level of housing stock therefore we are not seeking to convert three properties into two, or two properties into one. - cost is a key consideration and we will be looking for solutions that offer value for money. - the proposed works must be possible whilst the residents remain living in their homes [i.e. no decanting] competition web site : http://www.architecture.com/useanarchitect/findanarchitect/competitions/competitions.aspx email competition : [email protected] |
