| the government's energy efficiency best practice programme has launched its fourth open ideas competition to promote sustainable development and the design advice service. this competition follows 'ideas for a holistic hotel', 'ideas for a sustainable school' and 'zero co2 housing', held in 2000 and 1999 respectively. the theme of this year's competition is urban sustainability and entrants will be invited to explore the issues of environmental, social, and economic sustainability. the site chosen is the lochend butterfly and its surroundings, which lies about a mile from the eastern end of princes street in central edinburgh. defined by railway lines the five hectare site is largely derelict, but includes a loch, the last of a series of three, which is now the focal point of lochend park. the city council are keen to see a new vibrant quarter of the city emerge and the butterfly site represents the opportunity for a sustainable mixed-use development, including industrial, business, retail, and residential uses. much recent urban regeneration has taken place in areas surrounding the butterfly. it also represents a generic urban site with the potential to maximise the social, environmental, and economic sustainability of the city. jury panel: a leading international architect will be invited to chair the assessors panel. other members of the panel acting on behalf of the riba and the rias are koen steemers, simon barker and richard atkins. the current cibse president, max fordham, has also agreed to join the panel, which includes martin cook and noel burns of the building research establishment. prizes: a prize fund of £17.5k is on offer - 1st £10,000 2nd £5,000 3rd £2,500. eligibility: the competition is open to architects and students of architecture internationally. integrated multi-disciplinary teams are encouraged to enter. deadline: the deadline for submissions is thursday 28 february 2002 by 4.00pm. registration: to register and receive the competition brief send a cheque for £35.00 inc. vat [professionals] or £7.50 inc. vat [students], payable to riba competitions, to the address below. vat receipts are available upon request. the competition will be managed by: riba competitions office 6 melbourne street leeds ls2 7ps close collaboration will be maintained with the rias throughout the competition. |
