| castle lane area cultural quarter, bedford international open ideas competition bedford borough council is launching a competition for ideas to redevelop and revitalise the castle lane area in bedford town centre which currently provides a mix arts, heritage and car parking. bedford has a compact town centre with an attractive historic environment and is the second oldest borough in the country. bedford's heritage of buildings, spaces and riverside location give the town centre its own unique identity and sense of space. the castle lane area comprises facilities at the bedford museum and cecil higgins art gallery and the historic castle mound and gardens which are currently being restored. the area has been identified as a key development site in the emerging proposals for the re-development and revitalisation of bedford town centre and this has received overwhelming support from local residents at the town centre exhibitions who recognise it as an opportunity to provide a heritage led cultural focus and a visitor attraction for bedford. the original castle was built following the norman invasion but fell during a siege in 1224. the site of the mound has survived, as has the historic medieval route through the original castle complex. the 1.8 acres [0.73 hectare] area was cleared for redevelopment but has remained empty for 40 years. design entries should have regard for the character and profile of the area and provide sympathetic development proposals. they should also give consideration to the emerging development framework [or master plan] proposals, and the protection and enhancement of the architectural and historic features of the area. it has been indicated in the local plan for the area that acceptable uses for the site will include leisure, office and cultural facilities as well as residential. the competition is a call for ideas only, however, subject to successful planning and funding the council hope in the future to proceed with the designers of the winning scheme. competition format: the competition will be judged anonymously at the first stage. the authors of the best six designs will thereafter be invited to meet with the judges and 'present' their ideas to the panel. eligibility: the competition is open internationally to registered architects and students of architecture. submission deadline: 15th april 2004 registration: to register and receive the competition brief send a cheque for £35.00 inc. vat [professionals], or £7.50 inc. vat [students], payable to riba competitions, to the address below. vat receipts are available upon request. registration fees are non-refundable. please note that cheques coming from foreign countries must be drawn on an english named bank. riba competitions office, 6 melbourne street, leeds ls2 7ps t 0113 2341335 f 0113 2460744 e-mail [email protected] |
