an energy revolution - solutions for sustainable urban communities

submissions are invited for an open design competition based on a 2.2
hectare brownfield site on the edge of manchester's city centre. the
objective for competitors will be to design a mixed-use scheme which is
sustainable in its use of energy, urban in character and which promotes
co-operative lifestyles.

organised by inreb [integration of new and renewable energy in buildings]
and urbed [the urban & economic development group] with the support of cis
[co-operative insurance society] the competition forms part of a programme
of works designed to assist the construction industry in responding to the
challenge of climate change. the main aim of the competition is to explore
how the radical agenda set out by the latest government energy white paper
'our energy future - creating a low carbon economy' can be applied to
mixed-use urban schemes. the competition seeks ideas only, but whilst the
promoter gives no guarantee to build the winning design it is hoped that
this competition will bring forward ideas that could be developed in the
future.

the site is owned by the cis and is adjacent to their head office. the
society is looking for 'radical sustainability' solutions to the
development of the site and wishes to promote co-operative values.

the competition brief will invite entrants to respond to three themes:

energy revolution - site-wide sustainable energy strategy
new urbanism - mixed use development that is urban in character
co-operative lifestyles - a co-operative approach to energy, transport and
food.
the site:
the site is on the edge of ancoats and the northern quarter, in the north
eastern edge of manchester city centre, within walking distance of all city
centre amenities and with good transport links. the manchester plan [udp]
lists the site as being for 'business or commercial development which will
maximise employment'. however city planners have confirmed that they would
give serious consideration to any proposed mixed-use development.

entrants will need to develop a sustainable energy strategy for their
scheme, coherently tackling generation, distribution, storage and
efficiency. the strategy will need to address both thermal and electrical
energy use. the scheme will need to be urban in character, celebrating the
vibrancy of the city. competitors should also explore how the co-operative
delivery of energy, transport and food could make sustainable lifestyles
more practical and convenient.

eligibility:
the competition is open to architects and students of architecture
throughout the world. integrated multi-disciplinary teams are encouraged to
enter.
