| the steedman travelling fellowship in architecture, granted since 1925, is awarded biannually on the basis of an international design competition. the competition is supported by an endowment given to the washington university in st. louis school of architecture in honor of james harrison steedman, who received a degree in mechanical engineering from washington university in 1889. the steedman traveling fellowship enables graduates of accredited professional degree programs in architecture around the world to travel for architectural research and study in foreign countries for a period of nine months. candidates in the competition must be graduates of accredited schools of architecture, and be currently employed in, or have completed at least one year of practical experience in the office of a practicing architect. candidates are eligible to compete for up to eight years after receipt of their professional degrees, regardless of age. citizens of all countries are eligible to compete for the fellowship. the $30,000 fellowship is awarded to the winner of the steedman international design competition. the steedman fellowship and competition, by its structure and award amount, is the largest competition of its kind in the world. challange the current conditions of mid-size american cities show symptoms of development that are not always positive, let alone fitting into the utopian visions of the modern city. in fact, it could be held that the modern city in the u.s. is precisely that which appears 'outside': outside the coasts, outside the typical images one associates with the u.s.- such as new york and los angeles -, outside the main interests of current discourse: the mid-west is a silence, a pause, a bland version of something else. yet, these cities evidence with poignant clarity the change of rituals in contemporary life, and the influence they have imposed on their construct. further, these symptoms also appear in other countries and latitudes, with slight local adaptations, but still as clear echoes of urban life in the 21st century. go to barcelona, buenos aires, pusan, calcutta. the fact that these slippery, indeterminate characteristics manifest and influence the shapes of many aspects of our cities, [including the buildings that appear outside architecture, which are always a lot more, those buildings we criticize easily, or ignore] and the apparent voracity of the public in general to accept, utilize and eventually discharge them, ready to re-adapt to whatever and whenever will be the theme for the 2004 steedman competition. the program will be an edge that is actually becoming a redeveloped center of activity, produced by a violent erasure of the recent past, bulldozer in hand, flat out. it will be made up of time and velocity, appearance, possession and plastic, quick gratification and the promise of pleasure, botox, small doses of nature, grounded by an overdose of hollywood-imposed, not requested - with faulkner and hopper [edward] in the distance, maybe. it's the midwest, jake. download registration forms at http://www.arch.wustl.edu/steedman_download.lasso for more information or to register, contact: shannon platt email: [email protected] phone: 314-935-6293. website: http://www.arch.wustl.edu/news_sc.lasso |
