this is an open, one-stage, international competition to design a unique
structure that advances conservation and celebrates the natural and
cultural heritage of hawai`i via the performing and visual arts. to reflect
the modern era of computer-aided design, encourage a wide range of graphic
responses, and minimize the use of resources, the competition will be
conducted using digital processes [i.e., no boards required]!

the malama learning center competition presents a rare opportunity to
design a hybrid sustainable architecture to shelter an exciting mix of
educational activities. the center is intended to become a premier location
for conservation and arts activities. the site is a highly visible three
acre parcel at the entry to a new $75,000,000 high school in the city of
kapolei, an entry way to the stunning leeward coast of o'ahu. the location
is on the coastal plain -- in close proximity to the nature conservancy's
honouliuli preserve, which spans 3,700 acres on the southeastern slopes of
the wai'anae mountains.

the architectural program calls for a building of approximately 25,000
square feet. the heart of the malama learning center will accommodate a
multitude of individual and group functions. the new center will nurture
conservation and the arts by housing: classrooms, conference rooms, and
smaller spaces throughout the complex to provide space for formal and
informal teaching, meetings, and workshops; a performance and lecture hall
seating 300; a dance studio; studios for 'artists and scientists in
residence,' and exhibits about conservation activities and the visual and
performing arts. the center will also have an outdoor amphitheater for
larger performances, suitably designed for the ideal climate of hawai`i.
the center will have an extensive conservation program that includes:
hands-on training for students, volunteers, and professionals in
field-based conservation techniques; shadehouses to grow native plants; a
sterile laboratory for micropropagation; a specialized conservation
library; and administrative offices. a native hawaiian ethnobotanical
garden and native plant nursery will be focal points of the landscaping,
with areas where people can sit and enjoy the plants in ambient
surroundings. green, sustainable technology will be the running thread
throughout the malama learning center.

program objectives
to design a joint-use facility that:

. provides an interdisciplinary and holistic platform -- blending
environment, culture, arts, science and technology under one roof,

. reflects the 'project-based learning' educational approach of kapolei
high school [a design/build school established in fall, 2000] where
students of all ages will experience an integrated 'curriculum' in spaces
that are flexible and regenerative to nurturing the whole person,

. is a gathering place for the community where they learn to perpetuate the
hawaiian culture and values of caring for the land and sea and be inspired
through the creative arts,

. leads students and adults to pathways to conservation [e.g. as
researchers, volunteers, conservation professionals],

. showcases innovative and inspirational conservation projects throughout
the state,

. models sustainable architecture for hawai`i,

. can be constructed within an anticipated budget of $4-6 million.
