the tomihiro museum of shi-ga [poems and watercolor paintings] was born in the hometown of tomihiro hoshino, azuma village. it is a museum which continually speaks to us of the dignity and gentleness of life through its poems and watercolor paintings.

after nine years in the hospital due to an unfortunate accident, it was the nature of azuma village, which hoshino so loved as a boy, which welcomed him home. but it was as if he were seeing that familiar nature for the first time. azuma village is just a little village with 4,000 or so residents, surrounded by the deep green poetry of the mountains, the blue sky, and four seasons of wildflowers, groves of rhododendron, and red striped azalea trees. since it opened in spring, 1991 as a village revitalization project, the tomihiro museum has been standing in the midst of this beautiful scenery.

the minute you step into the museum, the treasures of hoshino's works bid you a gentle welcome. hoshino's pieces tell you unpretentiously but firmly of the courage and joy of living which comes from the midst of ordinary nature.

this year was the museum's tenth anniversary. in ten years, visitors to the museum have topped 3.7 million, and it has indeed become a museum on an international scale for which there is no comparison.

to cope with this unexpected response, remodeling and expansion work was done in 1996 to improve the facilities, but the fundamental problem of congestion was not solved. congestion raises the humidity and temperature in the museum, creating a poor inside environment and negatively impacting the exhibited works. judging that reconstruction was an early necessity, first the committee to study the future of the tomihiro museum in 1999 and then the committee to study the building of a new tomihiro museum were formed and did the concrete investigations necessary to bring the plans for the new museum into reality.

the tomihiro museum, thanks to the enthusiasm of so many supporters, has already been transmitting its unique culture to the world. this new museum construction project is a symbol of the resolve of the 4,000 inhabitants of azuma village to join proudly together to create a cultural institution of even loftier values.

the new tomihiro museum will showcase the rich nature surrounding azuma village. it will be a place to encounter tomihiro hoshino's way of life, the perfect place to appreciate that form of expression he excels at called 'shi-ga [poems and watercolor paintings ]'. more than anything, the new museum will be a place for creating the world that hoshino constantly seeks, the world of gentleness, courage to live, and love, and transmitting this message to not only japanese but to the people of the world. this concept, which so counters the plethora of information, technology, and materialism of the modern age, is one of universal human appeal, and the essential theme of the new museum.

whether we live in the most advanced city in the world, or in the beautiful nature remaining in places like azuma village, we all struggle with the hardships of life. surely we can all benefit from sharing hoshino's world, in which he continues day by day toward an overwhelming affirmation of life in spite of almost unbearable difficulties.

with this, then, we open the the international design competition to for a new tomihiro museum of shi-ga [poems and watercolor paintings] in azuma village, and call for diverse ideas and designs from around the world for the construction of a museum where visitors can always encounter gentleness.
