introduction the office of public works in ireland invites submissions to an open, one stage international competition for architects and urban designers and their teams, to design a dockland regeneration scheme for waterford north quays. this competition is a challenge to design a master plan for a very prominent waterfront site and an important cultural building [a venue building] for the city of waterford and the south east region of ireland.
objectives to seek the master plan for the north quays, waterford for a new, mixed use socially inclusive and sustainable riverside community and a framework for the regeneration of site with the consequential economic and social benefits to the south-east of ireland.
the venue building should make a statement, to embody or represent the cultural importance of the region. the venue building should be an independent entity, as well as part of the overall cohesive urban development scheme for the north quays.
location waterford city is situated on the banks of the river suir, in an area of mountains, lakes and spectacular coastal scenery. the north quays consist of the 7 hectares of semi-derelict wharves, which stretch along the northern bank of the river.
