The Korean Rural Architectural Competition is a public competition for the renovation of residential facilities by rehabilitating the old buildings found in Korean rural villages as well as inserting new buildings into these villages. It targets the former warehouses of Nonghyup and the former local children centre in Sari-Myeon, Goesan-Gun, Chungcheongbuk-Do.
Sari-Myeon, Goesan-Gun is an ordinary village with the opportunities and problems typical of any Korean rural village. Formerly a provincial centre, the village has declined in recent years because of modernization. The village has investigated the potential of a more advanced rural community as a way to combat the rapid population decrease it has experienced. Today, innovative villages are exploring new and inventive possibilities of development. The village tries to communicate and to reproduce among the generations by reproducing the architectural assets which contain the essence of the village’s past, present, and future. In this context, the possibility of using the former warehouse of Nonghyup and the old children centre is well worth reviewing. The village needs a space for discussion and the exchange of knowledge and ideas. There has, for a long time, been a need for programs that link the many generations within a “Senior Centre-Junior Centre.”
Furthermore, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and the Korea Rural Community Corporation looking for various ideas for developing the village in a style reflecting regional characteristics and utilising the architectural assets available in rural areas. We are seeking an option that can facilitate rural sustainable development. Competition Website: http://www.krac.kr/2015/main
