the journal of architectural education invites submissions of design work and teaching that investigate architectures commemorative capacities. the journal seek conceptually creative work that opens new possibilities for understanding architecture as cultural mark. such work may be built or unbuilt, and include tactics for revealing or reframing identities and histories, operations on contested territory, excavations and acts of recovery, mappings, and critically innovative approaches to the sacred, the mnemonic, or the monumental. jae welcomes alternative strategies for presenting design work, such as interviews and other forms of collaborations between designers and critics, writers, or scholars.
submission requirements
1. seven [7] copies of a 4-page presentation of the project in 8.5' x 11' bound format. supporting text of no more than 1000 words should clearly and succinctly explain the project, its critical intentions, and how it sheds light on the theme topic. as emphasis will be placed on graphic explanation, visual material should be selected and coordinated to best articulate the ideas pursued within a black-and-white print medium.
these 4-page presentations will be sent to jury members for advance review; they will also serve to give a sense of how the project can be articulated in finite form.
2. one portfolio of supplementary images and text in 8.5' x 11' bound format [max. 100 pages]. this material will be reviewed at the design jury.
3. a selection of images from the supplementary portfolio in pdf format [small files], if possible. these can be posted for advance review by jury members.
4. a separate cover letter containing the names of the faculty member[s], students, institution, address, phone/fax numbers, and email address. no identification of designers whatsoever should appear on the 4-page presentation or the portfolio. submission.
submissions will be blind-juried by a panel of design educators and professionals. label the package 'design: marking domain' and send to: howard smith, jae managing editor, 1400 randall court, los angeles ca 90065. for return of materials, please include self-addressed and stamped envelope.
