the journal of architectural education invites submissions of innovative design work and teaching that investigate problems and properties of surface, understood broadly as the locus of intention and appearance. questions about surface emerge anew in contemporary digital media, material technology, composition, and theory. the journal seeks both conventional and experimental design inquiries that explore the relation of surface to a variety of experiences, issues, and conditions, such as space, structure, enclosure, inscription, representation, ornament, topology, perception, gender, and difference. projects that use surface as a pedagogical tool, as the vehicle for a probe, or as an element of process are welcomed. jae encourages alternative strategies for presenting design work, such as interviews and other forms of collaborations between designers and critics, writers, or scholars.
submission requirements
