admitted to participate are artists and artists' groups working in the fields of visual arts, media arts, performance, architecture, urban research / spatial planning who completed their degree or, in the case of self-educated persons, have practiced their profession for a minimum of five years.
the assignment will be to develop artists' works exploring the aesthetic and social conditions of the following three public spaces:
1. consumer spaces: shopping malls and arcades new social forms are developing in consumer spaces like shopping centres, malls and arcades. semi-public spaces emerge—urban spaces that may be used by the public, are privately owned and use every means at their disposal to incorporate the insignia of public space. the task is to develop art forms adapted to the specific conditions of these spaces which will take into account the spectator as a consumer with his/her expectations, needs and movement patterns. submissions should deal with the concrete location 'duisburg citypalais' which is not only a shopping mall but also includes restaurants, a casino and the 'mercatorhalle' events, concert and conference centre [the new home of the duisburg philharmonic orchestra].
2. transitory spaces: streets and motorways more than in any other german region, in the decentralized urban landscape of the ruhr streets and motorways mark people's perceived reality. in a region crisscrossed by three huge motorways—the a 42, the a 40 and the a 2—the street, transition and transit are omnipresent. the task is to develop adequate art forms for a moving spectator. submissions should deal with the special role of the a 40 in the duisburg area. they may explore the concrete local conditions at the duisburg kaiserberg intersection, one of the biggest motorway intersections in europe, or the specific situation between the duisburg intersection and the duisburg-haefen exit which form a circle completed by the a 59 and the inner city connection mercatorstrasse, kremer-strasse, plessingstrasse.
3. data spaces: mobile technologies more and more, public space is turning into a space of invisible data which, especially in the past few years, has expanded enormously. mobile digital media such as mobile telephony above all are changing our behaviour in public urban space. they create a 'mixed reality' of their own in which the levels of reality between physical space and data space pervade each other. the task is to develop art forms that use mobile technology to test changed modes of communication, interaction and narration, to describe a new cultural space. competition web site : http://www.duisburger-akzente.de/de/wettbewerb_paradoxien_eng.php competition email : [email protected]
