daejeon is metropolitan city, located about 170 km south of the seoul, in the center of south korea. due to its geographical location, daejeon grew quickly as a transportation hub after opening a railway station transforming the station area a civic center which had been leading the early urban development.
when the population reached 1 million in 1990 and daejeon became a metropolitan city, the city was extensively expanded to absorb the nearby towns. and on the contrary, the city's dense quarter, the station area declined to one left with aging buildings and infrastructure.
and for the revitalization of the old civic center, daejeon metropolitan city and the korea land corporation has launched the international ideas competition for daejeon urban renaissance [djure]as part of the development of the daejeon station area.
the aim of the competition is to seek an innovative ideas for a master plan of daejeon urban renaissance development area for the revitalization of the old central urban district. and through this competition, the sponsors expect the daejeon urban renaissance area to become a strategic place promoting the regional development.
