Embracing the Moscow river, a new urban park is proposed as the site of the complex. The development of a memorable urban space invites the citizens of Moscow to a place of cultural activity. The proposal binds the relationship between the governing institutions of the city and its citizens.
The park acts as a focal point connecting the Kutuzovsky prospect, the Moscow river, and the new business district. Acting together, these elements become an integral part of the city structure. The river itself becomes a focus of urban experience, enhancing the memory of the city origins. Together with the Kutuzovsky prospect and its symbolism, they act as a direct link to the Kremlin and the historic city center.
Complementing the Kremlin and the historic center of the city, the park is an expression of modern sensibility. The architectural experience of the complex is governed by four qualities: Transparency, Translucency, Flexibility, and Resonance. Transparency - The exactitude of the proportioned urban space and of the crystalline geometry enables them to become transparent, thus accentuating the human events. Translucency - The crystalline structure permeated by the ambiance of the temporal changes challenges gravitational presence, thus establishing the experience of lightness Flexibility - The strict frame-format and the stereotomic conception offers possibilities for adaption and change within the program of the complex, without compromising the overall conception. Resonance - The inner space of the complex refracts and reflects itself, the urban scape of the city, the sky, and the people inside, becoming a kaleidoscopic collage which blurs the Cartesian experience of space. The transformation of the external physical reality into a total abstraction enables each individual to rediscover his sense of being.
The stereotomic strategy of the frame-format creates as the negative of the object an urban space. The longitudinal incision creates a central inner space oriented towards the sunrise and the sunset. This place will host concerts, exhibitions, and, during the winter, a skating ring. A series of incisions towards the river transverse the central space, permeating the static frame-format with a kinesthetic dynamic quality experienced when one moves along the river. Mirroring the movement of the ice in the spring, these incisions act as the main approach to the complex. The stereotomic strategy is directed to sculpt crystalline structures gathered as a group. Their structure generates the space and the light, establishing a horizon hanging between the water and the sky. |
