פרויקט "Picabu" צמח באופן מפתיע כאשר אחד ממנהלי מלונות Dolphin & Swan אשר בDisney World Orlando , הנמצא בבעלות רשת Thishman הניו-יורקית, אכל במסעדת Rich Hotel בניו-יורק על פלייסמט (מצע צלחת) של קקאדו, שמצא חן בעיניו. לכשהפך אותו מצא את כתובת אתר החברה שלנו והזמין אותנו לבוא לאורלנדו על מנת להציע רעיון לביצוע renovation למסעדה גדולה מאד במלון Dolphin שעוצבה לפני כ-17 שנים על-ידי המעצב הנודע מייקל גרייבס.

הפרויקט נהגה ונוצר על-ידי רעות שחר מתחילת דרכו כ"פרויקט סינדרלה" שמשמעו – לקחת חלל גדול מאד, 600 מ"ר של מסעדה שעובדת 24 שעות ביממה, אשר עוצבה בשנות ה-80 על-ידי המעצב האמריקאי הנודע מייקל גרייבס, בסגנון שרווח אז והתיישן הן מבחינת הקונספט והן בתפיסת הצבע, החלל וקהל היעד, ולהפוך אותה לחוויה שונה בתכלית, ללא שינויים מבניים.

וכך נולד לו "פיקבו" – דמות עולצת, חסרת גיל, המופיעה בכל סצנה עיצובית במסעדה. החלל שונה לחלוטין, עוצב והולבש מחדש:
- הקירות נצבעו בצבעים חיים, בטכניקה מיוחדת (Fade מבהיר לכהה).
- התקרה נצבעה בצבעי שמיים בטכניקות ייחודיות.
- ריפודי ספסלי הישיבה עוצבו מחדש.
- על משטחי השולחנות שחודשו אף הם, ציורים מקוריים כעין פאזל מתמשך, המוטבעים בפורמייקה חסינת אש.
- שטיח מקיר לקיר עוצב עם דוגמאות מקוריות.

כל הפרטים במסעדה הינם כיצירת אמנות ייחודית, כל האובייקטים מפוסלים ומצוירים ביד והם בחזקת אובייקטים אחד לאחד.
הקיר המרכזי, 4X6 מ', הינו עבודת אמנות בה כל האובייקטים הינם תבליטים המשמשים גם כגופי תאורה, כך שכל הקיר הינו יצירה שהאור פורץ ממנה בדרכים מפתיעות ושונות. מעל ספסלי הישיבה אקווריומים – פיקבו הדייג.

Creating pieces for the home as colorful a Purim party, the Israeli design firm Kakadu Design Ltd, has staked its first claim on the United States interior design market: by designing the interior space for Picabu restaurant in the Walt Disney Swan and Dolphin Resort Hotel in Orlando, Florida. The restaurant opened its doors this spring.

For a small, independent design firm like Kakadu, this coveted interior design venture is an impressive debut in America. The firm transformed a tired, dark buffet house into an evocative gallery of food and art comprised entirely of Kakadu furnishing. Everything, from the wall hangings to the booths and tableware, Kakadu designed and built in its Israeli studios.

Designing the interior space for Picabu required a lot of coordination and cooperation from several teams. Michelle Acevedo, Vice President of Design at Tishman Hotel Corporation, assisted Reut translating her artistic vision into a tangible product by creating the construction documents and aided with the technical aspects of the project. "Working with Kakadu on Picabu restaurant was unique for several reasons, one of them being that furnishing arrived on schedule, and that the project remained within budget. Kakadu was professional and accurate throughout the design phase and execution."

"It's hard to believe how differently the restaurant has transformed," said Wolfgang Ebenbichler, Executive Chef for the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort Hotel's 17 restaurants and lounges. "It speaks strongly to the creative potential of Kakadu. Reut approached the problem of designing the interior space not only from an analytical perspective, but as an artist."
