THISS Studio are responsible for the architectural and spatial design including the impressive tree structures and the planted landscape which is in part co-grown and co-sown by the communities of Birmingham. Inspired by the fact that the majority of plants in our city gardens come from overseas,PoliNations celebrates the cross-pollination that has shaped British culture.

THISS Studio were integral to the design and delivery of the entire installation, including the towering tree sculptures, known as Mother Trees, that collect rainwater and provide shade for an inner sanctuary, whilst providing a dramatic backdrop for the series of events. The design of PoliNations is informed by the idea of ‘forest succession’, reflecting how an evergreen grows and evolves over time, with the mother trees creating a safe environment for the rest of the forest to cultivate. The forest is made up of natural, organic and recycled materials, including bark mulch, cork, soil and tree logs to offer a natural process of development. The Mother Trees have been designed using generative engineering processes to minimise material usage in relation to their scale and size. The trunks are designed using generative processes that mimic the growth of an actual tree, taking advantage of rotational symmetry to create a lightweight self-supporting structure. These engineered trees are easily demountable and transportable for future use and are made from fully recyclable materials. The design of the installation has been carefully considered to fit the site and its surroundings, including the Council Building and City Hall of Birmingham. Horticulture specialists have tailored the plant placement according to the different microclimates across the site, with cool fringe forest floors that receive dappled sunshine through the canopies of the mother trees, to open onto flower meadows that are bathed in sunlight throughout the day creating the perfect urban forest environment.
Over 10,000 trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants have been conscientiously selected and grown for the event by local nurseries and gardens. The project has seen over 1,000 Birmingham residents from a wide range of local community groups grow marigolds that will be planted during the first weekend across the site. Once the events have been completed the plants will be distributed to community groups in the local area.
