דברי האדריכלית:
בפתיחת ספרית אהל-שם אמר ראש העיר מר צבי בר: " ספריה זו מהמכובדות בארץ, תהיה אבן נידבך ותמורה בהכשרת הדור והכנתו לעתיד. וללמדו כי השיקולים הרוחניים והמוסריים הם העיקר ויהיו נר לרגליו''.
כפי שלא ניתן להפריד בין גוף לנפש האדם כך היופי לו מיחסים את נפש הבנין קשור קשר הדוק לגוף הפיסי של הבנין. בנין הספריה החדש יכול לשרת את מטרתו בקירוב התלמידים והקהילה לספר רק אם הוא עצמו ייצור התרגשות ויחולל חויה רוחנית ליושבים בתוכו.
כשם שהספר או כל משאב מידע אחר הינו על זמני כך מבנה הספריה נבנה מתוך מודעות עמוקה לאותם דפוסי תכנון אוניברסליים שמבחנם הוא מעבר לזמן. דפוסי תכנון המהוים ראי לרוח האדם.
החוויה האסטתית שניתנה למשתמשים בספריה, לכשעצמה ראיתי בה כערך חינוכי ותרבותי שיצור תשתית עתידית של אנשים שיראו בערכים כמו אסתטיקה צורך קיומי לסביבה.
את זאת הבין ראש העיר אשר תרם במאמציו ובגיבויו ליצירת ספריה המהוה מודל ייחודי לספריות בכלל ולספריות בבתי ספר בפרט.
בניתה הותאמה בראש ובראשונה לתפיסות חינוכיות עכשויות שבהן יחשפו התלמידים למכלול משאבי המידע האפשריים: הספר, התקליטור, האינטרנט והמוסיקה.
ספריה זו מנצלת את הפוטנציאל המצוי בחברה מדעית-טכנולוגית מודרנית לא כערך בפני עצמו, אלא על מנת להשיג ולהחיות את מושג הספריה שידענו בעבר. ספריה ידידותית לקורא. בניגוד למחסן ספרים לספרנים, תפיסה שכיחה ברבות מהספריות שניבנו לאחרונה. ספריה המזכירה באוירתה את ספרית סן.גנבייב בפריז או את הספריה הלאומית בונציה.
הספריה ממוקמת בין שתי שורות עצי פיקוס עתיקים שהושארו בקפידה בשטח. תחושת הקורא ביושבו בבנין היא כאילו היה בתוך יער.
מסד הבנין עשוי אבן גיר בסיתות גס הנושא את קירות הטיח שמעליו. המסד היא ישות המחברת ומפרידה בו זמנית את הבנין מהקרקע עליה הוא יושב. פיגמנט הטיח הוא צהוב-מוזהב שנילקח מדוגמאת צבע עלי השלכת הזהובים שעטפו אותו קרוב למועד בחירת הצבע.
צבע זה, העצים הירוקים וכחול השמיים יוצרים הרמוניה של צבעים.
בואכה לספריה ישנה רחבה מרוצפת אבן שגרם מדרגות רחב עולה ממנה למרפסת הכניסה. המדרגות ומרפסת הכניסה מהווים אזור מעבר בין טיילת בית הספר לבנין עצמו.
הכניסה לחדר העיון היא דרך מבואה המשנה את קצב ההליכה וגובה הדיבור מהחוץ הרועש לפנים השקט.
בקדמת חדר העיון נמצאת פינת הקטלוגים הממוחשבת ואזור תצוגה לספרים חדשים.
חדר העיון בנוי מאזור מרכזי שלו תקרה מקומרת בגובה 7 מטר בו נמצא דלפק הספרניות. דלפק החולש ויזואלית על כל חלקי הספריה.
בשני צידי החדר נמצאות נישות עם ספרים ופינות הישיבה. בכל נישה מצוי חלון הפונה לעצים. כל נישה היא נושא ספריתי אחר.
בהמשך לחדר העיון מצוי חדר כתבי העת והאזנה למוסיקה על גבי פינות ישיבה רכות.
מעבר לדלתות הזכוכית ובהמשך נמצא חדר המחשבים והמולטימדיה .
כל חללי הספריה מהוים רצף ויזואלי אחד.
הריהוט עשוי מעץ בגוון דובדבן. הקירות הם בגמר דמוי משי בצבע זהוב .
התאורה היא באמצעות ניברשות היורדות מהתקרה ומנורות צד המשרות אוירה נעימה.
תחושת המרחב, הפרטים, חומרי הגמר והתאורה יוצרים יחד אוירה ידידותית וחויה רוחנית.
At the opening of the Ohel-Shem library the mayor, of Ramat Gan, Mr. Bar said: This library, one of the most respectable in the country, will be the firm base and support for preparing this generation for the future, and for teaching that spiritual and moral considerations are the essence that must guide his way.
As body and soul are inseparable so beauty, to which soul is attributed, is inseparable from the physical body of a building. The new library building will serve its purpose of attracting the students to the book only if it will in itself excite them when they sit there and create a spiritual experience that will affect them. Like a book or any other information resource which is timeless, so the library building was constructed with a deep awareness to those universal planning patterns, the test of which is beyond time, architectural patterns which reflect our true and genuine spirit as human beings.
I considered the aesthetic experience provided to the students in the library as educational and cultural value in itself, which will eventually create a nucleus of people who will recognize the importance of values like aesthetics to the environment. This was understood by the mayor who contributed his efforts to build a library which is a landmark in the conception of libraries in general and school- libraries in particular. It was constructed first and foremost in accordance with currant educational conception, aiming to expose students to all possible information resources- books, discs, Internet, music etc. This library uses the potential inherited in modern scientific-technological society not as a value in itself, but in order to achieve and revive the old notion of a library.
A friendly library to its users as opposed to contemporary libraries which looks like storage for books. A library which remind us in its spirit to St. Genevieve in Paris or the National library of Venice.
The library is situated between two rows of old fichus trees which were deliberately preserved in the area. The reader sitting in the library feels when looking out of the windows as if he was sitting in a forest.
The building has a lime stone basis in contrast with its plastered walls. The basis is an independent entity, which connects and at the same time separates the building to the ground. The color of the exterior walls is that of the golden fallen leaves which were around the building at the moment when I had to decide about the color. This color, together with the green of the trees and the blue of the sky create a whole.
At the entrance to the library there is a stone-tiled area with a wide stairway leading to the entrance balcony. The stairs and the balcony are a transition area between the school promenade and the library. The students linger on the stairs during breaks thus becoming more attached to the place. The entrance to the main reading room is through a hall, which slows the pace of walking and lowers the pitch of voice when entering the building. At the front of the reading room located the computerized catalogues and the display of new books.
The reading room, with its arched 7m high ceiling, is divided into a central area, where the librarians counter is a located and large alcove at the periphery with tables and bookshelves surrounding them. In each sitting area there is a window facing the trees, thus connecting the outside with the inside. Further from the reading room there is the periodicals section with low armchairs where the reader can put on earphones and listen to music.
Beyond glazed doors is the multimedia and computers room.
All the spaces of the library form one sequential space.
The furniture’s which we specially designed for this library is all made of cherry wood.
The wall is painted in warm yellow in silk texture.
The lighting is provided by chandeliers hanging from ceiling, and side fixtures creating warm atmosphere.
The spacious feeling, the small details, the finishes, and the lighting all together form a friendly environment with spiritual feeling.
